be induced by stimulus trains for 7.5 seconds only with the BDM or blebbistatin jet (100 nmol/L isoproterenol, 1.0 mmol/L [Ca ]o, 24°C). During sustained arrhythmias, Ca 2 surges preceded synchronous increases in [Ca ]i, whereas the stoppage of the BDM jet made the Ca surges unclear and arrested sustained arrhythmias (n 6). With 200 nmol/L isoproterenol, 2.5 mmol/L [Ca ]o, and the BDM jet, lengthening or shortening of the muscle during sustained arrhythmias accelerated or decelerated their cycle in both the absence (n 10) and presence (n 10) of 100 mol/L

Effect of nonuniform muscle contraction on sustainability and frequency of triggered arrhythmias in rat cardiac muscle.

BACKGROUND Arrhythmias are benign or lethal, depending on their sustainability and frequency. To determine why lethal arrhythmias are prone to occur in diseased hearts, usually characterized by nonuniform muscle contraction, we investigated the effect of nonuniformity on sustainability and frequency of triggered arrhythmias. METHODS AND RESULTS Force, membrane potential, and intracellular Ca(...

Protective effects of gallic acid on cardiac electrophysiology and arrhythmias during reperfusion in diabetes

Objective(s): Gallic acid (GA), a potent anti-oxidant, plays an important role in reducing diabetic induced cardiac disorders. Therefore, the present investigation was purposed to determine the beneficial effect of GA in cardiac arrhythmias during reperfusion in diabetes induced by alloxan. Materials and Methods: Male Sprague-Dawley rats...

Frequency of Cardiac Arrhythmias in Patients with Aluminum Phosphide Poisoning

Background: Cardiac failure is the major lethal consequence of aluminum phosphide (AlP) poisoning. This study was designed to determine the frequency of cardiac arrhythmias in patients with AlP poisoning. Methods: In this prospective cross-sectional study, patients with definitive history of AlP poisoning treated at emergency department of Allied Hospital Faisalabad, Faisalabad, Pakistan, from ...

Effects of regional mitochondrial depolarization on electrical propagation: implications for arrhythmogenesis.

BACKGROUND Sudden cardiac death often involves arrhythmias triggered by metabolic stress. Loss of mitochondrial function is thought to contribute to the arrhythmogenic substrate, but how mitochondria contribute to uncoordinated electrical activity is poorly understood. It has been proposed that the formation of metabolic current sinks, caused by the nonuniform collapse of mitochondrial inner me...

Stimulating cardiac muscle by light: cardiac optogenetics by cell delivery.

BACKGROUND After the recent cloning of light-sensitive ion channels and their expression in mammalian cells, a new field, optogenetics, emerged in neuroscience, allowing for precise perturbations of neural circuits by light. However, functionality of optogenetic tools has not been fully explored outside neuroscience, and a nonviral, nonembryogenesis-based strategy for optogenetics has not been ...
